Burundi is one of the poorest countries facing severe climate change related challenges, including a worsening food security situation for its vulnerable rural population.  A combination of extreme floods and droughts which are anticipated in the Imbo and Moso plains of Burundi are expected to cause an agricultural yield decline of 5-25% in the coming decades and reduce long-term growth by 2.4% per year.

The project's main objective is to build farmers' resilience to climate change in the upper, middle, and lower Imbo and Moso catchments and to increase agricultural productivity and food security through adoption of better agroecosystem management practices to conserve soil and water resources. The project will reach 573,540 beneficiaries, and it has three inter-linked components:

  1. improvement of soil and water management through the adoption of best practices in agroecosystem management by land users;
  2. capacity building of actors at all levels on best agro-ecosystem management practices for enhanced soil and water conservation; and
  3. development of an enabling environment for water and soil conservation.
